ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)

Tough, rigid thermoplastic with excellent impact resistance and surface finish

About ABS Plastic

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is an opaque engineering thermoplastic widely used across industries for its outstanding toughness, rigidity, and ease of processing. It is a terpolymer made by polymerizing styrene and acrylonitrile in the presence of polybutadiene rubber. The result is a material that combines the hardness and rigidity of acrylonitrile and styrene with the toughness and impact resistance of polybutadiene rubber.

ABS offers excellent dimensional stability, making it a preferred choice for precision parts. Its natural gloss and ability to accept paint, chrome plating, and other surface treatments make it a go-to material for consumer-facing components. ABS is also one of the most processable thermoplastics, processing well on standard injection molding, extrusion, and thermoforming equipment.

Specialty ABS grades are available with enhanced heat resistance (ABS+PC blends), flame retardancy (UL94 V-0), UV stabilization for outdoor use, and high-gloss or low-gloss surface finishes. Medical-grade ABS is available for ISO 10993-compliant applications, and plating-grade ABS is engineered specifically for electroplating processes.

ABS Grade Types

General Purpose ABS

Balanced stiffness, impact resistance, and processability. Used in appliance housings, toys, and general consumer products.

High Impact ABS

Higher rubber content for superior toughness. Ideal for parts subject to drop or mechanical impact.

Heat Resistant ABS

Higher Vicat softening temperature for use in automotive interiors, appliances, and electronics near heat sources.

Flame Retardant ABS

UL94 V-0 and V-2 rated grades for electrical/electronic enclosures, office equipment, and safety-critical applications.

Plating Grade ABS

Engineered for electroplating with chrome or other metals. Used in automotive trim, bathroom fixtures, and decorative hardware.

ABS/PC Blends

Combines ABS processability with polycarbonate's heat and impact performance. Common in automotive, IT, and medical devices.
