About TPO (Thermoplastic Olefin)
Thermoplastic Olefin (TPO) is a blend or alloy of polypropylene (PP) and a rubber component — typically an ethylene-propylene rubber (EPR) or ethylene-propylene-diene monomer rubber (EPDM) — along with mineral fillers such as talc. The result is a material that combines polypropylene's stiffness, heat resistance, and processability with the rubber's flexibility, impact toughness, and low-temperature ductility. TPO is semi-crystalline and fully recyclable, with no thermoset cross-linking.
TPO is the dominant material for automotive exterior body panels and bumper fascias. Its ability to be painted (with proper surface preparation or primer), its excellent UV and weathering resistance, and its low density (typically 0.90–1.05 g/cm³) make it a lightweight, cost-effective solution for large structural exterior parts. Most OEM automotive TPO grades are qualified to specific OEM paint adhesion and appearance standards.
Compared to thermoplastic elastomers (TPE/TPV), TPO is stiffer and more rigid, occupying the space between standard polypropylene and rubber-like materials. The rubber-to-PP ratio and talc loading are tuned to deliver specific flex modulus, impact performance, and surface hardness targets. Higher talc content increases stiffness and heat deflection temperature; higher rubber content improves low-temperature impact. TPO does not require drying before processing.
TPO Grade Types
TPO is processed primarily by injection molding and extrusion. Injection molding grades are engineered for specific flow, surface finish, and impact targets; extrusion grades are used for sheet, roofing membranes, and wire jacketing. Typical melt temperatures range from 200–240°C with mold temperatures of 30–60°C.
Automotive Exterior Grades
OEM-approved grades for bumper fascias, cladding, rocker panels, and mirror housings. Engineered for specific flex modulus (typically 1,000–1,600 MPa), low-temperature impact (−30°C Charpy), and paint adhesion to OEM specifications (e.g., GM, Ford, Stellantis, Toyota).
Automotive Interior Grades
Soft-touch and hard TPO grades for instrument panels, door trim, pillar covers, and storage bins. Interior grades are formulated with low-VOC and low-fogging additives to meet strict interior air quality standards.
High-Flow Injection Molding Grades
Designed for thin-wall, large-area parts where fast fill and low injection pressure are needed. Used for large bumper systems, full front-end modules, and complex trim assemblies.
Mineral-Reinforced (Talc-Filled) TPO
15–40% talc-filled grades offering higher stiffness, improved dimensional stability, and elevated heat deflection temperature. Key material for structural interior components and under-hood applications where rigidity is required.
Paintable / Adhesion-Promoter-Free Grades
Specially formulated TPO grades with surface-active additives that allow direct painting without a separate adhesion promoter or flame/plasma treatment step. Reduces manufacturing cost and complexity in automotive paint lines.
Roofing & Industrial Extrusion Grades
Single-ply roofing membrane grades and sheet extrusion compounds with enhanced UV stabilization, HALS packages, and broad thermal service range (−40°C to +100°C). Also used for geomembranes, pond liners, and industrial sheeting.
